America Must Kick the Oil Addiction

Our country is addicted to oil. Even George W. Bush, a former oil peddler, admits to this addiction.

Yet Bush and many other federal politicians are touting more drilling as the solution. Drilling for offshore oil is like giving an addict a bigger dose � it doesn�t solve the problem, and actually makes it worse. Worse yet, our addiction to oil isn't just hurting us -- it's making the whole planet sick. Global warming threatens us all, and if we don�t break our addiction, we�ll ALL suffer the consequences.

It�s time to quit our addiction to oil and choose a healthier lifestyle. In order to get clean, we need to make a permanent switch to clean energy. The cycle of addiction must end now � and it�s our generation that must stand up and make the change, or there may not be generations to come...

Tell our next President and the new Congress to just say no to offshore drilling.

Dear Senator John McCain, Senator Barack Obama,

I am writing to ask that you pledge to reinstate the Presidential moratorium on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).  More offshore drilling will not significantly affect gas prices, help curb America�s dangerous addiction to oil, or help in any way to combat global warming.

The U.S. burns 25 percent of the world�s oil yet we have three percent of the world�s proven oil reserves, meaning we will never be able to drill our way to lower gas prices or energy independence.  More offshore oil drilling will merely divert American resources and ingenuity away from renewable forms of energy such as solar and wind that can, unlike more oil drilling, result in lower energy costs, help break our addiction to oil and reduce the pollution that causes global warming. And despite a growing barrage of industry rhetoric, nothing about offshore drilling is �clean�.   Even at current levels, offshore drilling spills hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into the ocean environments every year, causing untold damage to fish and wildlife.  Expanding drilling to new regions is as reckless as it is unnecessary.

A Republican president, George HW Bush, first enacted the presidential moratorium on drilling in the OCS in 1990.  In 1998, a Democratic president, Bill Clinton, added to the ban and extended it to 2012.  Protecting the OCS from drilling is an issue that cuts across party lines, and that both parties have held near and dear.

Please pledge that, if elected, you will reinstate the presidential moratorium on drilling in the OCS. Drilling in the OCS only benefits Big Oil, and it�s not part of the energy future I will vote for.
