Dear Mr. von Rosenberg, Mr. Gascon,

I am concerned about Omega Protein’s fishing operations in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic coast.  I am writing to urge you to follow through on your stated desire for a healthy Bay, and to end your short-sighted and irresponsible efforts to oppose sustainable management of the menhaden fish population.

The huge quantity of fish that you catch annually has reduced menhaden stocks to the point that it is affecting entire ecosystems. As you well know, the Chesapeake Bay is the most important nursery area for menhaden.  Menhaden fill many key ecological roles, most importantly as a source of food for fish and other wildlife and as filter feeders capable of improving the Bay’s degraded water quality. Omega Protein has sought to maximize its catch of menhaden regardless of the cost to coastal ecosystems or the people who depend upon them.  Additionally, your company has undermined the regulatory efforts of the Atlantic Fisheries Commission every step of the way.

Factory fishing is overkill.  Your actions are threatening the entire Atlantic food chain. Please take measures to protect the menhaden population, and to promote healthy coastal ecosystems capable of supporting sustainable fisheries and communities.
