For 26 years, there have been bans on offshore oil and gas drilling, and for good reason. At decibel levels of 260, seismic blasts have a devastating impact on whales, dolphins and other marine mammals that rely on their sense of hearing to survive. In fact, they can lead to permanent hearing loss, brain hemorrhaging and even cause entire pods of whales and dolphins to beach.

Right now, the Energy Bill includes a seismic survey of the entire coastline of the continental United States and Alaska. According to our research, that would mean at least 285 million seismic blasts, or the equivalent of 2.6 billion tons of TNT.

Dear Senators, Representative,

As a constituent concerned about the health of our oceans and all it’s diverse wildlife, I am writing in reaction to the recent vote which allowed the harmful OSC inventory to remain in the Energy Bill. I am disappointed in this decision and urge you to protect our coastal waters against threats like these as the bill approaches joint committee conference.

Currently, there are offshore oil and gas leasing and drilling moratoria protecting sensitive beaches, parklands and fisheries off our nation’s coasts.  Yet the bans are being threatened by anti-coastal protection amendments that would serve as the first steps toward offshore drilling for oil and gas. It is already known what resources are available within the OCS and therefore this inventory is superfluous and only poses as a detriment to coastal ecosystems.

Because of the nature of seismic surveys, this inventory will require the use of air gun blasts to search for oil and gas. This survey will require at least 285 million blasts to inventory the entire US coast, including Alaska, which is the equivalent of 2.6 billion tons of TNT. These blasts threaten  marine wildlife by causing permanent hearing loss, disorientation, brain hemorrhaging and death.

As the energy debate continues, I urge you to protect our oceans from not only the drilling for oil and gas, but from seismic surveys as well. This is not the solution to the energy crisis!
