Big oil companies have American consumers over a barrel, and Congress hasn�t lifted a finger to help us, even though the solutions are within reach. In the face of global warming and rising prices, the time to switch to renewable energy is now. Let�s break America�s addiction to fossil fuels.

Dear Senators, Representative,

America's oil addiction not only feeds the greed of oil companies reaping record profits at the expense of American consumers, but also fuels the growing threat from global warming. 
 
Clearly Congress has failed. As oil prices spike, the scientific consensus that global warming is real has become unavoidable.  Meanwhile, Congress� answer has been to attempt to open America�s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling. The BP oil spills and subsequent closure of parts of the Prudhoe Bay oil field proves that drilling for more oil in one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the world is not the visionary energy policy this country requires. 
 
With Americans burning 25% of the world oil supply and sitting on only 3% of world oil reserves, it is clear that the U.S. can not drill itself out of this mess.  Only reducing the demand for oil will lead to more stable prices and begin to reduce pollution from global warming. 
 
I call on you and your colleagues in Congress to pass a real energy plan that reduces our consumption of oil while beginning to tackle the emerging threat from global warming. This energy plan should include real increases in automobile fuel efficiency standards, ending subsidies for oil companies, and redirecting spending to support renewable energy alternatives like wind and solar, while achieving mandatory reductions in global warming pollution.
